Manjhi: The Mountain Man is a film based on a real life story of Bihar’s Dashrath Manjhi who truly proved that where there is a will there is a way. The movie depicts saga of a man who successfully accomplishes the unimaginable task of carving a path through the mountains from his village Gehlaur to the nearest town but only after struggling single handedly for 22 long years. All credits to ‘The Mountain Man’ that the distance got reduced from 80 km to merely 13 km. His inspiration to initiate and conclude this rigorous task was his wife whom he loved immensely.

The role of Dashrath Manjhi has been played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui and this film is his finest performance till date. Radhika Apte who plays Fagunia, his wife has also done a commendable job.

The film starts with a monologue between Dashrath wearing blood soaked clothes and a mountain where the hero challenges the mountain that he will not stop unless he reduces it to rubble.

Dashrath, while young, gets married to child-bride Fagunia. But because of the utter poverty and the atrocities of village Zamindar, he runs away. When he returns home seven years later, he falls in love with Fagunia, who has grown into an immensely beautiful woman. They were spending a love-filled life despite of all the challenges they face only until Fagunia meets an accident. Unable to save his wife’s life, Dashrath gets inspired to splinter the huge mountain and make a way out of it to the nearest town Wazir Ganj. Although it takes a long time of 22 years but it was his love for his wife that keeps him motivated all through. People make fun of him but he doesn’t move. An admirable performance and another feather in Nawazuddin’s cap, this film is a must watch!
