This underworld melodrama is so over-packed with stuff that either 148 minutes of this film will seem too long to you, which it is; or in fact, far too short to meekly absorb the story of the rise and fall of an Ahmedabadi bootlegger don — without the audience feeling lightly hung-over by a breathless narrative-overload. Raees movie review

  • Genre – Action
  • Star Cast – Shah Rukh Khan, Mahira Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui
  • Director –Rahul Dholakia
  • Rating –  3.5/5

Most of this you would’ve already seen or heard. Which is the problem with over-promoted pictures that break down a film’s favourite dialogues and scenes into several trailers? It does kind of mess with the freshness of a first-time viewing, with popcorn and coke, right in the front row of a full, single-screen theatre, which are the ideal spot for this film that I’m joyously reporting from. Raees movie review

Story Of The Movie

Raees stars Shah Rukh Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Mahira Khan and Atul Kulkarni in central roles. It is directed by Rahul Dholakia and talks about the life of Raees (Shah Rukh Khan), who as a young kid learns about illicit business and shows a constant growth as a street smart illegal stock and liquor dealer as he grows. Raees movie review

The film is shooted in the state of Gujarat and with an action packed ride that would satisfy the SRK fans. Atul Kulkarni is acting as Shah Rukh’s boss for whom the latter works initially but later breaks off to start his own illicit business which marks the first main phase of the film. From there on, there is an opening of many important characters that includes a police officer played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Raees movie review

The rest of the story tells about what happens between these two main characters Raees and the police officer, Nawazuddin. It is an all-round mixture of action, emotions, mass moments, betrayal and a cat and mouse game.

What About The Performance

Shah Rukh Khan (Raees) and Nawazuddin (the police officer) holds the film on their shoulders with their energetic performances. Mahira Khan who acts the female lead does not have much to do. The movie’s main hindrances are its monotonous tone and silly scenes that make it a proper hero-centric commercial flick. It is SRK all the way and the overwhelming nature of his character spoils the essence of the script for a critic or a non-fanatic.

You Must Not Miss Because

Overall, Raees is a Shah Rukh Khan movie that is solely the life story of a gangster who started from the bottom and is majorly shouldered by the lead actors. With loosely packed action scenes and not a very appealing cat and mouse game, Raees lacks the punch that could’ve sold it to the next level and made it an enjoyable watch for one and all.

There is no doubt, Raees would surely satisfy fans of Shah Rukh Khan and those who don’t mind unrealistic entertainment. Raees movie review

And The Last Word

An action thriller that victuals to Shah Rukh Khan fans but lacks the punch for the common audiences!
