Sunscreen and lotion, powder and deodorant, shampoo and body scrub and so on. There is a number of personal-care products in our bathroom closets—women use an average of 14 a day, men six—contains a collection of chemicals. While many of the chemicals utilized in common personal-care products are good, some are recognized as carcinogens, neurotoxins or reproductive toxins. Others are endocrine disrupters that agitated the body’s hormonal balance (leading to weight gain and other hormone-related health predicaments), incorporating chemicals that simulate estrogen in the body and can cause difficulties in sexual development and adult sexual function, as well as raise the risk of breast and prostate cancer. Six skin ingredients to avoid
Sadly, these toxic ingredients may be more common than you think: More than one-third of all personal care merchandises contain at least one element associated with cancer. And that’s just the top of the iceberg, as less than 25 percent of the chemicals in personal-care products have, for safety. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t control or limit the use of chemicals in personal-care products or order that all of the ingredients be listed on the label. Six skin ingredients to avoid
As a result, trying to pick safer personal-care products can be perplexing. You can read labels, but just because the FDA doesn’t monitor the health claims or labeling for personal-care products, the words “herbal,” “organic,” “hypoallergenic” “natural,” and “nontoxic” used on these products have no legitimate meaning. One unusually disturbing example of this is the “pink-washing” of brands that have campaigns to fight breast cancer while proceeding to use ingredients that have been linked to cancer. Six skin ingredients to avoid
No one should have to worry about accidentally choosing toxic products while buying the personal-care products because almost all of them are intoxicated. That’s why a society of organizations, comprising the Breast Cancer Fund, have come together to make The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, an alliance working to reduce dangerous chemicals from cosmetics and personal-care products through authoritative, regulatory and corporate reforms.
