Do you ever consider yourself a superstitious person? Do you carry a rabbit’s foot with you or have a lucky t-shirt that you are afraid to wash? If so, you are not the only person. A survey back in 2006 found that 77% of all people admit themselves to be at least a little superstitious and practice some form of superstitious action.

No matter if you are part of the 23% that does not believe in superstition, seldom your actions may say otherwise.
Harris Interactive in 2014 found that only 21% of those surveyed claim to think it is unlucky to walk under an open ladder. Though, when viewed with that exact scenario, a British psychologist found that over 70% of people risked walking into traffic to avoid walking under a ladder (foot-over bridge) that is built on the sidewalk.

So, when it comes to good luck and bad luck, we would rather risk our lives getting injured than getting bad luck. In many phases of our lives, luck plays a big role. However, the difference between good and bad luck can end in either hope or despair. Whether it is in life, career or love, we could all use a little more good luck.

Well, we are lucky because we have found four simple ways that we can increase our luck, all credit goes to the psychologist Richard Wiseman. None of them involve rabbits, ladders or unwashed t-shirt.

  • Relax – Maximize Chance Opportunities

In the game Monopoly, there are two kinds of card-drawing spaces, Chance, and Community Chess. Both cards can have negative or positive results, but the Chance cards are far more possible to move a player around the board.

In his first test, Wiseman found that we all hold chance cards that are expected to move us up in life and help us maximize our possibilities. How to become a lucky person in life

In this principle experiment, volunteers were asked to look through a newspaper to count how many images it contained. On average, the so-called unlucky people took about more than a minute to count the photos, but it only took the lucky people a few seconds. How to become a lucky person in life

This is because the next page of the newspaper highlighted a message which said, “stop counting, there are 44 images” The message took up half the page and was printed in very large size fonts. It was impossible to miss, but the unlucky people jumped right past it while the lucky ones recognized it right away.

Another large message was printed in the midway through the newspaper. This one said, “Stop counting, tell the experimenter you have seen this and win some cash.” This time too, the unlucky individuals were too busy in looking for images. How to become a lucky person in life

The reason lucky individuals saw the messages while unlucky ones did not has to do with how calm or anxious they were. Wiseman found lucky members to be more relaxed, which enabled them to spot many possibilities that unlucky people did not. How to become a lucky person in life

After this experiment Wiseman said- Lucky people are skilled at noticing, creating and acting upon every possibility. They do this in many ways, adopting a relaxed attitude to life, including networking and by being open to new experiences. How to become a lucky person in life

  • Trust Your Gut – Listening to Lucky Hunches

We have all had a gut feeling seems to be telling our mind what to do. How we react to that feeling may have a lot to do with our luck. How to become a lucky person in life

Wiseman asked his test members to fill out a questionnaire regarding the role of inner voice in their lives. The survey asked them to show whether they believed their gut when making decisions about their relationships and careers.

Almost 90% of lucky individuals said they trusted their inner voice in regards to personal relationships and nearly 80% said that it played a large part in their career choices. On the other side, unlucky individuals trusted their gut far less. How to become a lucky person in life

  • Expect The Best – Expect Good Fortune

Wiseman asked his test partners to mark on a scale of 0% to 100% the chances of a specific future situation. Lucky individuals expected a 90% chance of spending a great holiday and an 84% chance of fulfilling a lifelong dream. Unlucky individuals resulted in far lower hopes, showing roughly a 60% chance in both instances.

Lucky people wait to be lucky. They have very positive prospects about what will befall them in the future. Unlucky individuals expect just the contrary. Both cases can create a self-fulfilling predict which result in lucky people’s resolution in the face of failure. A negative outlook forms a wicked cycle by preventing unlucky individuals from taking chances and not let them spot the opportunities.

  • Turn That Frown Upside-Down – Turn Bad Luck to Good

It doesn’t matter how lucky you may be, you will not experience great fortune for forever. Negative situations come to everyone’s life. How you react to those events may just manage your luck.

A research issued in 1982, has shown that mood changes memory. Imagine you were involved in a car accident. One person may find it a terrible experience as it caused him to be late for work. Another person’s find it to be positive as he is just happy to have survived the accident. How to become a lucky person in life

You might have figured it out by now how a lucky person would view and react to a situation. Wiseman’s research discovered that four psychological techniques that help can help you to become lucky:

  1. Lucky individuals always see the positive side of their bad luck
  2. Lucky individuals are assured that any poor fortune will, in the long run, work out in their favour
  3. Lucky individuals do not stop on their bad luck
  4. Lucky individuals take effective steps to limit bad luck.
  5. Luck Is In The Way You Think

There is no mystical formula for immediately create an endless supply of good luck. However, there are simple methods that can help us all bring good luck. Our sense to maximize our chances, listen to our guts, always expect the best will help us increase our luck. It has nothing to do with lucky t-shirt.
